CBD Oil Capsule Buyers Guide and Differences Explained

CBD Oil Capsule Buyers Guide and Differences Explained

A fast and easy way to ingest CBD oil on the go that lasts all day? This is the goal of many CBD capsule manufacturers. However, there are lots of types of cannabidiol capsules available. Why are there different types, and what are they? These are the questions we will answer in this short article, so before you buy CBD oil capsules online, read this article!

CBD Bases for High-CBD Hemp Capsules:

Hemp CBD oil comes in many forms with varying percentages of CBD by volume.

CBD oils: CBD oil has varying concentrations, and may contain additional cannabinoids, lipids, terpenes, vitamins, and minerals. The type of oil used to suspend the CBD generally does not change the effect of the capsule as long as the amount of CBD in each pill remains consistent. Some people make pure CBD oil capsules at home, but it is rare to find these manufactured on a larger scale. Generally, CBD oil is mixed into a carrier oil, such as MCT oil, in order to make manufacturing capsules easier and make the CBD more bioavailable. Another method that some manufacturers use is spraying CBD oil onto a powder base as opposed to mixing into an oil. This method makes it easier to consistently dose each capsule and eliminates the risk of oil leaks inherent in liquid capsules.

CBD isolate: Another kind of base you can use to make CBD capsules is CBD isolate. These capsules are generally mixed with other inert powders to bulk up the volume of each capsule, since isolate is very pure and a low volume contains a very high amount of CBD. This is not a common method right now, but as the price of CBD isolate continues to drop, more manufacturers may start producing capsules this way.

Water Soluble: The third type of CBD oil base is a water soluble CBD oil capsule. These capsules offer great bioavailability compared to oil based capsules, but tend to be more expensive. Typically, water soluble CBD oil powders are broad or full spectrum concentrates plus binders. What this means is that the water soluble powder will contain other cannabinoids than just CBD, whereas CBD isolate powder contains only pure CBD and no other cannabinoids.

Type and shape of capsule:

The two most popular types of shells are two-piece capsules and gel capsules. We expect to see the popularity of gel caps to steadily grow over the next couple years.

Broad spectrum, full spectrum, or just CBD?

Most cannabidiol capsules will be broad or full spectrum, meaning they contain CBD, CBC, CBG, CBN, and in the case of full spectrum, trace amounts of THC. Isolate based capsules are the exception to this, since they are ONLY CBD and contain no other cannabinoids. Most water soluble powders will also be broad spectrum, making them THC-free, but containing all the other cannabinoids from the plant.

Common questions regarding CBD oil capsules will include:

What’s the recommended starting dose for a CBD oil capsule?

Unfortunately, there is no concrete answer to this question because every person has a unique endocannabinoid system, but usually people take between 15-50mg per day in capsule form. Due to all of the variables involved, you may need to experiment by starting with a low dose and working your way up until you find the right dose for you.

Why does one brand of CBD oil capsules cost twice as much as another brand?

This is a good question that has no good answer. This could be due to a number of different factors including manufacturer’s MSRP, manufacturer’s  proprietary formula, different technologies used to make the capsule, varying prices of oil depending on manufacturer’s purchase strength, etc. All the differences in price can be mind boggling, but the important part is the amount of cannabidiol per capsule, measured in milligrams (mg). Generally, this is the main factor when a manufacturer is determining a price for their product; however, this price will increase if it’s water soluble CBD oil or something else unique.

Hopefully this short article will help explain CBD oil capsules in greater detail so you as a consumer can be better educated on what you are buying and make a better decision on what is best for you.
