Are there other cannabinoids in our CBN oil?
There are trace amounts of the minor cannabinoids such as CBC, CBG and even a little CBD in our oil. This is a good thing! Cannabinoids, when consumed together, exhibit something called the "entourage effect" and these combinations act together to enhance the overall therapeutic effect.
What's the Difference: CBN vs CBD Oil
Both CBN and CBD are a hemp extract of the cannabis sativa plant with many potential benefits. The cannabis sativa plant has many cannabinoids, over 100 compounds, many of which we haven't researched as yet. CBD and THC are considered to be major cannabinoids where CBN is considered to be a minor cannabinoid based on relative amounts found in the plant.
While cannabidiol (CBD) has been most popular and received more research in the recent past, cannabinol (CBN) is not far behind. Both compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) but have different effects. The CBD compound has no psychoactive effects like THC; however, CBN is a breakdown product of THC and has some psychoactive properties although it's only 25% the strength of THC. It initially became popular as a way to identify aged cannabis plant - the higher the CBN, the older the plant. And then we realized that CBN has some unique properties of its own!
How does the endocannabinoid system work?
The endocannabinoid system is found in all mammals and composed of cannabinoid receptors, modulatory enzymes and cannabinoids that are produced by the body (endocannabinoids). These receptors, called H1 and H2 receptors, are found primarily in the central and peripheral nervous system and can be influenced by exogenous cannabinoids such as THC and CBN as they have a similar shape as endocannabinoids and can interact with receptors to varying degrees.
The ECS has been shown to regulate/control our immune system, learning and memory, pain management, sleep and even digestion. While CBD is a cannabinoid it does not interact directly with the receptors. Instead, it is thought that it prohibits the breakdown of endocannabinoids and enhancing their effect.
What are other ways to take CBN?
CBN products can be found as tinctures, oil emulsions, gummies or CBN capsules and even as isolate CBN. The purest form of CBN will be as isolate CBN that can be taken as is or mixed with an oil product such as peanut butter or butter to be used in baking. This is a great way to make healthy snacks with all the benefits of CBN.
How is CBN produced?
CBN is a breakdown product of naturally occurring THC. As soon as the cannabis plant is harvested this process begins and the process can be accelerated by things such as heat, humidity, light and exposure to air. All these factors will cause oxidation of the trichomes, rich in THC, on a plant thereby reducing the Delta 9 THC into tetrahydrocannabinolic acid and ultimately into a CBN by-product called cannabinolic acid or CBNa.
The most common method of CBN extraction involves hemp plants with higher than normal CBNA, a precursor of CBN. Application of UV light may sometimes be used to oxidize THC into CBN in the plant prior to extraction prolonged exposure to air and heat will yield the same results. Using solvents all the cannabinoids are then dissolved and extracted under pressure and heat.
Effects of CBN
CBN has many health benefits, some that are similar to CBD and others that are unique to cannabinol.
CBN is best known for its sedating properties. The most current research shows that CBN, when combined with CBD and CBC, is as effective as melatonin as a sleep aid without the morning grogginess.
Anti inflammatory properties: Much like CBD, CBN has been shown to have anti inflammatory properties by reducing the histamine response known to cause chronic and acute inflammation. While most of these studies have been in animal models we are hopeful that they translate to humans as well.
Pain relief: CBN, particularly when combined with THC and other cannabinoids, has been shown to have peripheral analgesics properties similar to that of capsaicin and may be used to alleviate chronic and topical pain. In a 2019 study using a rat model, CBD and CBN used in conjunction were effective in relieving myofascial pain associated with TMJ disorders and fibromyalgia. For people who suffer from these disorders this combination could be invaluable as treatment.
Neuroprotective Properties: Recent studies have shown cannabinol delays symptom onset without affecting survival in ALS patients as well as decreasing ocular hypertension (intraocular pressure) found in glaucoma.
Bone Health: Our skeletal system also responds to endogenous as well as exogenous cannabinoids such as CBN to assist with bone formation, reduction in bone loss and improved healing.
Antibacterial properties: Perhaps most exciting are the antibacterial properties of CBN products and various cannabinoids that are currently being researched. Some cannabinoids have been shown to be highly effective against Staph infections, in particular antibiotic resistant Staph or MRSA. This is truly amazing and an area of research that could have far-reaching impact on healthcare worldwide.
These are only a few of the most prominent known effects of CBN and research is still in the early stages. As we conduct more research we find more health benefits related to the cannabis plant.
Are there any medications I shouldn't take with CBN?
It's always recommended you consult a healthcare provider before starting a new medication regimen and the cannabinoids are no exception. There are some known drug interactions that may occur with CBN. Antiepileptic drugs for seizures, blood thinners, antidepressants and hypertension medications are just a few. We know that cannabinoids are metabolized by liver enzymes and may affect the way other medications work so it's best to consult a medical professional prior to use.
CBN Oil or CBD Oil for Sleep?
CBN oil may be taken alone; however, all of the cannabinoids work best when taken in conjunction with other cannabinoids. CBN has been shown to be useful in promoting deep sleep and helping people stay asleep without the aftereffects of other medications such as morning lethargy.
CBD oil may be useful as a sleep aid when taken alone; however, scientific research has shown that the two compounds when taken together exhibit a synergistic effect further enhancing the effects of both. Therefore, for the most restful sleep you should consider taking a combination of the two.
What's the best way to take CBN?
Using a sublingual tincture will provide the most rapid and highest rate of absorption directly into the bloodstream with effects lasting several hours. Placing a tincture under your tongue and holding it there for at least 20 seconds (longer if possible) will allow rapid absorption.
Ingesting gummies or food with CBN will take longer to take effect as it has to pass through the digestive tract and be absorbed in the intestine. This will result in lower bioavailability due to first pass metabolism through the liver although the effects may also last several hours.
We always recommend you try several methods and dosages until you find the one that works perfectly for you. Not everyone prefers the full effects of CBN, instead they are looking for a solution for anxiety without the drowsy effects that can be found with many anti-anxiety medications.
Is CBN legal?
CBN, much like the other cannabinoids, is not considered to be a controlled substance and is legal in all 50 states although it is derived from the cannabis plant and is a direct breakdown product of THC. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp products from the Controlled Substances Act and made it legal to manufacture these products for general consumption. Be aware that some full-spectrum products may have THC in amounts up to 0.3%, the max allowable by law. As with all products you purchase, read the label and know what you are getting. Our CBN has a high concentration of CBN and smaller amounts of other cannabinoids-no THC.
Will CBN oil trigger a positive drug test?
CBN can produce a positive urinalysis for THC as the molecule is similar (since it is a breakdown product) although it will depend upon the sensitivity of the test as well as how much and how long you've been taking CBN. CBN normally stays in the human body for 2 to 5 days but this is dependent upon a number of factors such as your weight, body fat, age, etc. It's safe to say you should be aware of the possibility of a positive drug test for marijuana if you are taking CBN and prepare accordingly.
How much CBN should I take as a sleep aid?
Using a water soluble tincture 30-60 minutes before bedtime with a starting dose of 5 mg and adjusting upward to 10 mg should be effective. Be sure to hold the tincture under your tongue for at least 20 seconds. If you choose to combine CBN with CBD you may notice an enhanced effect so your dose should be altered accordingly.
How long does the effect of CBN oil last?
When taken sublingually you can expect the effects of CBN to last approximately 4-6 hours and may kick in within 30 minutes so plan to take it within an hour of bedtime.
If you are ingesting CBN with food or gummies you'll have more time before you feel the effects and likely will experience a more subtle effect that will last 2-4 hours.
What's the best way to store CBN oil?
Store your CBN product at room temperature and, as with most medications, it's best to avoid direct sunlight. Make sure you avoid exposure to the air as this may decrease the therapeutic potential benefits of CBN. Shaking the bottle before each use will ensure equal distribution of the product.
Does CBN help with anxiety?
Much research has been done on the effects of CBD and anxiety; however, CBN research is lacking in this area. What we do know is that CBN has sedative properties that may alleviate anxiety alone but when coupled with other cannabinoids, particularly CBD, there is a greater potential for anxiety relief.
How do I find trusted products?
Look for a Certificate of Analysis
Our product manufacturers make our products in a HEPA filtered clean room using the purest of products and all our products are analyzed for CBN content by a 3rd party lab that provide a Certificate of Analysis. We make our test results available for our customers on our Lab Results page.
As with any product be sure you know what you're taking. CBN oils should be water soluble if possible as this is readily absorbed by the body making the bioavailability much higher than tinctures in oil bases. Look for any products that may have ingredients you are allergic to or other contaminants such as heavy metals.
Read product reviews. In this age of online purchasing, reading reviews is perhaps the best way to know about a product you are thinking of buying. The consumer that takes the time to review a product feels strongly, either positively or negatively, about the product. This is actually a great way to determine whether customers have been satisfied with a product and will help guide you to the products that consumers like best. If they have a lot of 5 star reviews, chances are good they are a stand-up company.
