In the new CBD market, it can be very difficult to be a conscientious consumer. People looking for some kind of relief and treatment tend to encounter a variety of hoops to go through and lingo to learn to ensure they get a quality product, due to the fact that CBD is federally unregulated. Everyone seems to want a piece of the action in the up-and-coming hemp industry, though not all companies are as earnest as they may seem. Many products are marketed in a deceitful way as CBD oil, when in reality they are just hemp oil. Quite commonly, hemp oil -- or hemp seed oil -- is marketed as CBD by sneaky companies even though they are two very different components within hemp.
One of the main differences between hemp oil and CBD is their source of origin. Hemp oil is typically derived from hemp seeds -- which contain nearly no phytocannabinoids. The highest amount of phytocannabinoids present in hemp seeds in this study was measured at 1.53 micrograms (mcg) per milliliter (ml). This is a microscopic amount since 1 mcg = 0.001 mg -- which is the most common measurement of CBD products. On the other hand, CBD is is a phytocannabinoid. Often, CBD is extracted from the flower of a hemp plant with numerous extraction methods such as supercritical CO₂ extraction, steam distillation and solvent extraction. The difference here is that CBD is a molecule, whereas hemp oil is an oil from the hemp plant. The molecule of CBD is often produced into a tincture using a carrier oil for ease of use. Even though hemp oil may not contain any significant amount of CBD, it isn’t useless. It’s actually very rich in fatty acids, which can make it amazing for cooking, and many swear by it as a great oil for their beauty regime. While both may have their own potential benefits, they are inherently different according to the research. While it may seem overwhelming, it is imperative to know what you’re getting when navigating the ever-growing CBD market. Finding reputable companies can be difficult while the market is still unregulated, though it is definitely possible. Having the tool of knowledge can be the difference between buying a product that brings satisfaction and being incredibly let down.
