Veterans May Soon Have Access to Marijuana Derived CBD oil

In a groundbreaking move, the United States Congress has decided to allow veterans to discuss cannabis as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain, and other ailments with their Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) doctors in states that have legalized medical marijuana. For many vets, this is a sigh of relief as they will finally be able to gain legal access to domestically grown marijuana derived CBD and other products without the worry of losing disability benefits. Since cannabis is still illegal on a federal level, the VA previously refused to discuss any CBD whether derived from hemp or marijuana as a viable treatment and alternative to addicting opioid painkillers and anti-anxiety benzodiazepines that vets are typically prescribed.

The rates of prescription drug abuse and overdose is staggeringly high in the United States, especially among combat veterans. According to a report by NPR, the VA treated nearly 650,000 veterans with opiates in 2014. CBD oils, tinctures and other products are a usually a welcomed alternative for many vets who are looking for a natural and non-addicting way to cope with their chronic pain and PTSD.

In another unprecedented move, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (FDA) recently approved the first-ever study on the efficacy of cannabis products for veterans with PTSD. Prior evidence was considered anecdotal, but this study will be published in academic journals, which may lead the way for more research. The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAP) has sponsored the clinical trial, which will test the safety and efficacy of marijuana in treating chronic PTSD in 76 US war veterans.

This study and others that look at CBD as treatment for PTSD, chronic pain, and other ailments will hopefully lead to a better understanding of the healing benefits of cannabis. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with PTSD or chronic pain, you may consider looking into CBD as a daily supplement. DiscoverCBD offers CBD in many forms, including tinctures and oils, at levels comparable to those used in the aforementioned studies.
