Could CBD Help People With Sickle Cell Anemia?

As more and more people turn to cannabidinol (CBD) and THC to help ease a litany of different ailments (think anxiety, cancer, chronic pain), the number of people suffering from a host of other illnesses are wondering if CBD-derived products are right for them. Additionally, scientists and doctors are also researching cannabis as a way to help their patients and offer a potential alternative. One such disease being looked at is sickle cell anemia, which is a genetic blood disorder that affects between 70,000 to 100,000 people in the United States.

Sickle cell anemia changes the shape of healthy red blood cells into a "sickle" shape thus preventing a healthy flow of oxygen and nutrients by creating blockages in small blood vessels. Sickle Cell can cause severe pain, swelling of the hands and feet, frequent infections, delayed growth, and vision problems. Major complications can include stroke, pulmonary hypertension, and organ damage. There is currently no cure for this disorder although bone marrow transplants are often seen as the best option. Common treatments to maintain sickle cell anemia include medication and blood transfusions.

Recently, some have suggested that CBD may be a good option for those with sickle cell, specifically for its anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. A 2014 study at the University of Minnesota found that cannabinoids can be effective at treating chronic pain in sickle cell patients, which is a welcome relief for patients who may be utilizing powerful prescription painkillers in order to cope with the sudden burning or stinging that may occur. This results of this study have convinced other researchers in California to conduct larger-scale trials on CBD and THC, suggesting that sickle cell anemia patients may soon see more options on their treatment and wellness plans.

This and other studies that look at CBD as a treatment for those with sickle cell disease will hopefully lead to a better understanding of the healing benefits of cannabis for blood disorders. If you are interested or someone you love suffers from sickle cell anemia, you may consider looking into CBD as a daily supplement. DiscoverCBD offers CBD in many forms, including tinctures, vape liquid, and edibles at levels comparable to those used in the aforementioned studies.
