Welcome to the family, THC-O!

What Makes THC-O Unique

Meet THC-O, a cousin of the more well-known hemp-derived compound,  Delta-8 THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol-o-acetate (THC-O) is a man-made cannabinoid manufactured from hemp, it is often referred to by the names THC-O acetate, THC acetate, and ATHC. While this compound is relatively new to consumers, it is quickly gaining popularity in states without legal access to the traditional Delta-9 THC from Cannabis, since it’s current legal status falls under the 2018 Farm Bill.

A Different Kind Of Feeling

THC-O induces a similar high to THC, but is believed to be around 3x’s stronger and even “psychedelic”. While high doses can be relatively debilitating, a moderate dose is almost identical to that of traditional delta-9 THC. THC-O is what’s considered to be a “prodrug”, meaning that it must be metabolized by the liver in order to activate. It is speculated that THC-O-Acetate is much more potent than it’s non-acetylated counterpart due to bioavailability. Once the THC-O is metabolized, what remains is essentially just the THC which functions as usual, but at a much higher rate. Because of the cannabinoid’s prodrug classification, THC-O can take hours to feel effects when ingested, this often leads users to make the common yet critical mistake of consuming a second dose too early. It is important to make sure to wait at least an hour before taking a second dose as having both doses kick in at same time can lead to unexpected and uncomfortable consequences.

Choose A Reputable Product

It is important to be cautious of where you acquire THC-O products because it is so new to the market, the variations of product quality can be considerable. When using a low quality extract material as well as low quality reagents you’re likely to be ingesting a low quality product. It is important to make sure you’re only consuming clean, pharmaceutical grade reagents from a licensed company that provides a downstream purification process.
