Hemp Myths Debunked

From bus tours across the country to people taking action and writing letters to their senators, “Hemp Week” is coming out swinging harder than ever.

But, it’s not all bells and whistles. Hemp remains one of the most misunderstood plants in all of existence. As purveyors of hemp products and as a business that receives testimonials on a daily basis regarding hemp/CBD-based products changing lives; we feel like it is our duty to debunk some of the most common myths surrounding hemp. We aim to offer scientific evidence by citing cases and resources that policy makers, farmers, and the public can be educated when it comes to one of the most versatile plants on the planet.

Myth #1: Smoking industrial hemp will get you high

Facts: As “The Hemp Trip’s” Rick Trojan cited, “you could smoke all three acres of my hemp farm and your lungs would give out before getting high.” This is because the levels of THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis, are excruciating low in hemp plants. However, it is chock full of CBD, the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant.

Myth #2: But can’t you just plant hemp crops to hide marijuana plants?

Facts: Hemp and cannabis are of the same genus and closely related, but they are actually on different harvest cycles. Hemp is almost exclusively grown outside so that they can produce long stalks. The plants are grown extremely close together to maximize crop space. They often get to be ten to fifteen feet tall! Marijuana, on the other hand, has been bred throughout generations to produce female flowering plants that yield budding flowers during their flowering state. In order to produce large buds, marijuana plants need a closely monitored life cycle and therefore, they are often grown inside. In conclusion, it is MUCH harder than it seems to hide marijuana in hemp crops!

Myth #3: Advocating industrial hemp is a front for those who want to legalize marijuana

We can’t speak for everyone’s motives and many people are advocates of both industrial hemp and legal marijuana. However, most hemp farmers see its worth independently and are motivated by cultivating it as an agricultural crop. They simply see its potential and many are motivated by how sustainable it is. The bottom line is that people should not oppose an idea just because they may or may not also support other notions they may or may not disagree with.

Myth #4: Industrial hemp crops are not economically viable

This could not be further from the truth. Did you know that hemp has been used to make clothing paper, textiles, CBD oil , concrete, plastic, health food products, and even cars?! Describing it as a “cash crop” speaks the truth. Hemp has been traced back to being used in ancient villages 8000+BCE, remains were found in a shipwreck from the 1800s, and it’s the comeback kid of modern times.
