CBD and your Immune System

The CBD industry is booming with today’s modern sciences. It seems like everyday a new study comes out with more information than the day before. Although CBD is not a cure-all supplement, it is used for so many different ailments that it has to have some effect on your immune system, right? Let’s first look at the immune system to get an idea of how it works.

There are two different types immunity mechanisms that help prevent and fight diseases, cell-meditated immunity and humoral immunity. Cell-meditated immunity is your immune system protecting the body from intracellular infections, viruses, and bacteria. Humoral immunity focuses on the extracellular pathogens and toxins. However, both have innate and specific immune components. Cell-meditated immunity works with helper T-cells to fight off antigens. Whereas, humoral immunity relies on macromolecules to help fight off antigens. But what are the affects of CBD on the immune system? Where do they intersect? Look no further than the Endocannabinoid System.

There are 2 types of different cannabinoid receptors throughout our bodies, CB1 and CB2, the immune system isn’t any different. The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) acts as a neuromodulator, meaning it sends information to neurons altering their activities throughout the nervous system. When the ECS interacts with the immune system it acts as a sort of hub to help the immune system in areas needed most. Some scientists refer to this process as the “immuno-cannabinoid” modulation. Studies about this modulation are hard to come by, but many believe that the ECS can help vary the properties of the tone and overall function of the immune system.

Although, there hasn’t been a lot of studies done on the effects of immunomodulation, research suggests that at great concentrations different cannabinoids have the ability to help with autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, arthritis, and many others. In cases like these, the immune system is suppressed. However in cases of HIV and cancer where the immune system is already suppressed, studies show that CBD and other cannabis properties can actually help strengthen the immune system. With this in mind, one could determine that it’s possible to balance your immune system with CBD.

Research from the targeted use of CBD for the immune system has shown great positivity. With so many questions still unanswered though, scientists are currently running many tests to reveal just how the ECS interacts with the immune system.
