Does CBD induce sleep?

Posted by Juanita Padilla on

Common thought is that ingestion of marijuana, or any of its chemical compounds including CBD, will help with sleep. Studies suggest that this may not be the case. Where THC has been shown in human trials to induce sleepiness, CBD in low doses may actually have the opposite effect. How, then, can CBD be a sleep aid for so many?

Current studies show that THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, does induce sleep in varying amounts depending upon the strain with the indicas being best for sleep induction and reduction in nightmares and the sativas being less helpful. Low doses of CBD actually stimulate receptors resulting in a caffeine-like wakefulness; however, higher doses such as those found in extra strength tinctures that are readily absorbed may be conducive to more restful sleep.

To be fair, the most likely reason for the reported restfulness that has been reported from ingestion of CBD is most likely due to the pain relieving properties that have been reported with its use.

Ultimately, you will be the truest test of how well a product will work for you. As always, it is suggested you try various remedies to aid in sleep. Some of the best natural sleep remedies recommended by Andrew Weil, MD are:

  • Eliminate caffeine from your diet, especially in the form of soft drinks and coffee, as well as over-the-counter drugs (check the labels).
  • Practice daily breathing exercises, and the relaxing breath when falling asleep.
  • Take a warm bath before bedtime.
  • Get at least 45 minutes of aerobic activity every day.
